“Words combined, now create one new word.”
I’m sure some may wince at this concept. If they, or you reading this right now, are well spoken or a word connoisseur I’m sure this is appalling. I’m also sure there are many beautiful words in the English language already available to us and the mere thought of this concept would be unacceptable by these types of scholars.
In fact, I’m sure, it’s down right insulting.
But, what about the people like me who just use the basics?!
“Fabulous” “Amazing” “Awesome”
Basic words I use regularly simply because those are the first words my brain thinks of. Others may say “wondrous” or “prodigious” because they have a broader vocabulary and to be truthful, in the past, I would have thought of these unique minded thinkers as people who wouldn’t be able to relate to me, that I’m too “simple minded” a person for them. Or that I would be thinking I wouldn’t be able to relate to them, because I wouldn’t be able to keep up. All this being said, I whole heartedly believe if we were sitting next to each other, as opposite as we are, watching a sporting event together, we would absolutely relate quite well. We may just use different words doing it.
“The Yankees are going to get it in the neck and get crustroyed by the Red Sox tonight.” (Crustroyed=crushed and destroyed)
To which they may reply….
“I contest that statement and proclaim the New York Yankees will indubitably devour your Boston Red Sox.” (Do people even talk this way?!)
Combining words to deliver a stronger impact or add some humor to a sentence is really the satisfying result of creating this new vocabulary.
Recently, I saw a picture of an athlete holding a plank on her forearms, wearing bootie shorts and a sports bra, and thought “Wow, she’s absolutely strong and beautiful” to which I quickly heard myself say “Streautiful, streautiful should be a word.”
That little dent that your sun glasses leave on the bridge of your nose, that’s called a “Nosglass.” I made that word up when I was about 12. It’s on the nose and only glasses make that dent, hence, “Nosglass.” And for whatever reason, I pronounce it “Nuzgluz.”
Gigantic and enormous?! Now have become “ginormous” and what is it that I’m even looking at that I think is so big I need to combine two words that already explain how big something is?!
I have a friend who was asked by a family member how her new job was going to which she replied “Ya’ know it’s awesome, lovely, and fantastic” then quickly proclaimed “Awelytastic” as a new word and it was as if I saw an Angel.
“Someone who thinks like I do!!”
And, that, that thought, for whatever reason, is really comforting.
“She gets it! She gets it and she gets me.”
Why is that even important? Or why do I, or we, make it important? It’s that feeling of wanting to connect and relate (“conlate” – used in a sentence – “can you conlate with what I’m saying here?”) with each other.
I had another friend refer to her husbands beard that grew down his neck as his “Neard” and used it in a sentence. “My husband shaves his neard and it makes me recognize other guys that shave their neards now too.” And I was again thrilled to find another person like myself and then suddenly went from laughing to deep reflection, “Oh man, I remember when my guy use to shave his neard.”
On a random Wednesday night my guy used the word “crapsicle” to describe the level of annoyance he was when he accidentally hit the wrong button on the remote and I just looked at him and heard myself say…
“This! This falls in at #107 on the list of reasons I love him.”
And it wasn’t that long ago when I was out with a friend on a Friday night and we ran into someone she knew and out of her mouth came “You look fantabulous.” To which her friend replied “Awww, thank you!” And I just stood there smiling.
How did I find my like minded thinkers?
How did they find me?
I’m not sure how we all find each other, the ones that mesh with us so well. Is it the power of the universe? Is it the cosmic pull? Is it laws of attraction?!
I’m not really sure, but it’s all just awelytastic that we do.

Shout Out: Hey Cardman! No offense on the Yankees reference buddy!!!
Note: Special thanks to Stacey Welch for Awelytastic. Emily Happick for Neard and my sweet Amy Reagan for Fantabulous. And of course, my guy, who flips between crapsicle and poopsicle depending on the level of annoyance.

Yet another reason why I love you my chiend. (Childhood friend)
