“If It Weren’t”

If it weren’t for having you to watch, I don’t know how much I would have pushed myself throughout my life.

If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t have had my own paper route where I could start making my own money. And, if it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t have been able to ride my bike to the center of town to the little bakery where I could purchase my very own jelly donut with said money. Which to be honest, at 11, felt like a very big deal.

Watching you find a way to earn and work for the things you wanted? Probably one of the best things I could have witnessed. I wonder though, I wonder what flipped the switch and put you on your path.

I’m not sure where the drive began.

I watched you purchase not just your own phone for your bedroom, but got your own phone number. Purchased a TV for your bedroom bigger than the one we had in the living room, and even purchased your own air conditioning unit for your room because the rest of us were being told and buying into “If you just put the fan in the window backwards and shut the door it cools the bedroom down by sucking the hot air out of the room.” I don’t know this statement to be true or not, (I have never taken the time to fact check this) all I can tell you is, in August in CT during a heatwave all ya’ really want to feel is some kinda’ cool air blowing on your melting body stuck to your sheets. I digress…

All that drive, before you were even 18.

Maybe you were told “We can’t afford it” or, maybe worse “You’re not allowed” or maybe you heard “If you want it you buy it.” I truly haven’t a clue, but whatever it was, it turned into “Watch me.”

Just watching you, as my older brother, just by being yourself, taught me the only limits we have are the ones we put on ourselves.

You show us all anything is possible.
